@TheZark, Yeah, it says it needs "surrogate evidence". I think that's why it's holding them.

@ANNET I think you're mostly right. The only aspect I can add is that I think it's specifically looking for Captain, but doesn't have much information about him, so it's holding on to Snippy and Pilot in case they can come in handy later.

@Ross, Well, in a later strip it says it only spared Captain's property (it considers Snippy and Pilot to be Captain's property), so that might be the reason it hasn't killed him yet here. It could be that here, it's just trying to capture him and bring him to Captain, but Snippy doesn't know that. After all, when it got Pilot it didn't kill him, it dangled him in front of Captain and asked "Does this belong to you?" So I'm guessing its intention here isn't to kill.
